The Port of Guayaquil is the main port in Ecuador, handling approximately 70% of the country’s foreign trade through the National Port System. The demand for constructing a deep-water port capable of receiving Post-Panamax vessels has increased due to the recent expansion of the Panama Canal. The Posorja area has been identified as the most viable location for this project due to its strategic characteristics for the design of a Modern Port. BEP Advisors, in partnership with EcoAnalysts Inc., participated in the Posorja Project on behalf of BID Invest to conduct a site visit and assess the Critical Habitats of the mangrove ecosystem in the area. The team evaluated potential adverse impacts on the mangroves and aquatic habitats and developed recommendations for mitigation measures proposed by the project.
